Cell Phones.

This is coolbert:

To war with cell phone.

Been a while since we have heard of the Red Maoist forest guerrillas of India. Insurrectionists waging a war against the government of India for over four decades now.

From Strategy Page an interesting article:

"Winning: Fighting For A Dream In Rural India"

"March 13, 2016: India is defeating its communist rebels by installing 2,200 new mobile cell phone towers in the nine eastern Indian states most afflicted by communist (Maoist) rebels. Most of these are already in service. This is in response to a 2008 Maoist decision to destroy cell phone towers in these states. Communications are vital for the police, and enable the growing number of civilians to use their cell phones to call in information about the Maoists. The growing availability of cell phone service in rural eastern India was very popular with the civilians and the security forces also found cell phones were a good (sometimes superior) substitute for the usual military and police radios."

Agents in the field able to communicate more or less instantly with HQ intelligence. Report the sightings and observations of Maoist insurgents. I HOPE THESE COMMUNICATIONS TOO ARE BEING DONE IN A SECURE MANNER.

Games.

This is coolbert:

"these Games were exclusively masculine, that they followed a period of war, that they opposed soldiers and finally that they valued activities considered themselves as virile and male appropriated . . . many elements made this event a stage for masculinity."

The Inter-Allied Games of 1919.

Olympic type competition in the aftermath of the First World War [The Great War].

Military competitors only!

"Athletics at the Inter-Allied Games"

And featuring some "unorthodox" events the like of which is never to be seen again.

To include the GRENADE THROW!

"An unorthodox addition to the track and field events was the hand grenade throwing competition. This non-point-scoring event consisted of throwing for distance rather than accuracy and the winning distance of 245 feet and 11 inches, set by American military chaplain Fred Thomson, was declared a new world record."

In this regard the organizers of the Inter-Allied Games seem to have totally ignored or been oblivious to the Ancient Olympics. The javelin event as in the Olympiad of ancient Greece thrown for both distance and accuracy.

NO GOOD THROWING THE WEAPON UNLESS THE DISTANCE WITH ACCURACY IS PRESENT AT ONE AND THE SAME TIME! IN THIS REGARD THE ANCIENTS WERE CORRECT AND THE MODERNS WERE NOT!

Meth.

This is coolbert:

Opiates si, alcohol no! And much more than opiates!

"Counter-Terrorism: Meth Means A Lot To Islamic Terrorists"

"March 15, 2016: Counter-terrorism organizations have long recognized the connection between illegal drugs and Islamic terrorism. While these drugs are not forbidden in Islamic scripture, as alcohol is, most Islamic scholars and clerics condemn drug use by Moslems. Yet one of the appeals of Islamic terrorism is the tendency of these groups to point out that there is a long tradition of  'Holy Warriors' . . .  using these drugs in various useful ways."
Ways to include:

* "it is justified to manufacture and sell these drugs to infidels (non-Moslems) to raise money for the cause and weaken the enemy."

* "Islamic terrorists to use drugs to get in the proper mood to carry out suicidal attacks"

* "to unwind after some high stress combat." [chill dude, chill!]

* "Some Islamic sects allow some drug use to help get into a more meditative mood and get closer to God."

A variety of drugs too as manufactured by the Islamic State in their own labs and sold in Europe [ecstasy in Europe a very popular drug of choice?] additional to meth I might understand as a BIG SOURCE OF REVENUE? ISIL street thugs in Europe also levying a street tax on drug gangs also a source of revenue? Cadre and terrorist cells able to sustain themselves with little if no real effort.

SMG Silenced.

This is coolbert:

These various You Tube video of silenced sub-machine guns [SMG] most interesting.

Silenced weapons the report of which significantly reduced.

Report of course the "bang" made by the firearm. GO LISTEN!

1. "Suppressed Thompson with Lane Socom 458 Silencer Tommy Gun"

It is reputed that Australian SAS in Vietnam had access to and used on patrol a silenced version of the Thompson SMG, that Aussie response to the weapon most favorable.

2. "Sterling Mk5 Suppressor (L34A1)"

Disregard the commentary in Japanese and concentrate only on the report of the weapon as silenced.

3. "Integrally suppressed full auto Sten build"

A silenced Sten as used effectively during Operation Rimau from the era of the Second World War.

Silenced SMG very useful I might well imagine during special operations type missions.

That degree of advantage as gained in an ambush situation marked?

The adversary less able to return fire with accuracy?

Silenced SMG if equipped with sub-sonic rounds as fired also reducing that report. That too within the purview of special operations almost exclusively so.

Target Israeli.

This is coolbert:

My instantaneous reaction on seeing this headline in the latest edition of the DEBKAfile news letter was that indeed the Israeli tourists had been targeted. One of those recent suicide terrorist bombings in Turkey deliberately directed toward the Israeli citizen.

"Three Israelis killed in Istanbul suicide attack, six missing"

19 March.

"The suicide blast that hit Istanbul Saturday, March 19 killed three Israelis . . . They were on an organized culinary tour of city. Another 11 Israelis were injured, three are in dangerous condition and six are still unaccounted for."

DEBKAfile however has sources that are not of that opinion. The ISRAELI TOURIST WAS NOT THE TARGET!

"Claims that Istanbul bomber targeted Israelis - Turkish disinformation "

21 March.

"The widely-reported claim originating in the Turkish media Monday, March 21, that the suicide bomber who murdered four people and injured 39 in Istanbul Saturday had deliberately targeted Israeli tourists is challenged by DEBKAfile's intelligence sources. Those reports are classified as Turkish disinformation meant to demonstrate that their MIT intelligence service was on top of the wave of terror sweeping their country. In fact, Turkey is paying the price for its president's and intelligence service MIT's long dance with ISIS networks and open border for jihadist fighters to enter Syria."

The "business" of intelligence as word intelligence understood always fraught with difficulty. 1. Your adversary is always taking measures to prevent you from establishing the facts with reliability. 2. The adversary is presenting to you in a deliberate manner false information intended to trick and fool.

Who said any of this was easy?

Nasrallah & WMD.

This is coolbert:

Consider this to be the sort of statement that does nobody any good.

Only exacerbates a situation already very bad. Hardens hearts and makes for greater antagonism.

From the latest issue of the DEBKAfile newsletter:

"Nasrallah threatens to rocket Israel's nuclear sites in future war"

21 March.

"Hizballah chief Hassan Nasrallah again threatened Israel Monday: 'If the Israeli army escalates its aggression against Lebanon, Hezbollah will strike all the strategic targets in the occupied Palestinian territories, including the nuclear facilities,' he said, and boasted that Hizballah has rockets that can strike anywhere in the country. 'We have a full list of targets including nuclear reactors and biological research centers, and will not abide by any restrictions or red lines in the event of any war against Lebanon,' he said."

It is generally agreed [??] that the global terrorist threat is not an existential threat. More of a nuisance [a very deadly nuisance agreed] but only a nuisance!

UNLESS THE TERRORISTS GET THEIR HANDS ON WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION. TO INCLUDE ATTACKING NUCLEAR FACILITIES IN SITU AND REMOTELY USING MISSILES OF LONG-RANGE CAPACITY.

As advocated and threatened by Nasrallah!!

Black & White.

This is coolbert:

War as that word understood comprised of three distinct phases: * What led up to the war. * The fighting of the war itself. * The aftermath of the war.

From the article by Professor Ian Kershaw in the BBC "History" magazine titled:

"HOW EUROPE ROSE FROM THE DEAD"

"While the First World War triggered 30 years of terrible violence the Second ushered in decades of peace. How can we explain the contrast?"

Europe in the several decades after the Great War chaotic, unstable, general prosperity elusive. Reasons for this as identified by Professor Kershaw to include:

1. "The first was an explosion of ethnic-racist nationalist conflict, especially in the eastern half of the continent."

2. "A second interrelated, strand of the comprehensive crisis was territorial revisionism." [those nation-states and the boundaries thereof as formed by the Versailles Treaty]

3. "Thirdly, there was the festering sore of class conflict."

4. "The fourth element was interwoven with the other three. This was the unprecedentedly deep and lasting crisis of capitalism that followed the First World War and fed into the Second."

That European situation for decades [and continuing to this day] in the aftermath of the Second World War far different. Marked improvement, conditions much more favorable for general prosperity, Reasons for this as identified by Professor Kershaw to include:

1. "First, the potential for further German aggression was eliminated."

2. "Secondly, Soviet domination of eastern Europe largely removed the sources of ethnic conflict."

3. "Thirdly, geopolitics had been completely transformed by the war." [United States and the Soviet Union were now the two top dogs, Europe relegated to a secondary position]

4. "Fourthly, in contrast to the searing crisis of capitalism of the interwar years . . . the take-off into sustained and spectacularly high levels of economic growth . . . provided the platform for political stability."

GENERAL AND OVERALL PROSPERITY IN THE UNITED STATES IN THE AFTERMATH OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR FOR INSTANCE MOST REMARKABLE.

In 1939 only one American male in four able to own an automobile. By 1947 almost 100 % of American males able to own an automobile. General prosperity in Europe it might be mentioned for the most part relegated to that western part of the continent.

And thank you Professor Ian!

coolbert.

War Wagons.

This is coolbert:

As has been described in previous blog entries the Xiongnu and Han at loggerheads for the better part of several centuries. See previous blog entries regarding this conflict:

http://militaryanalysis.blogspot.com/2015/12/han-i_25.html

http://militaryanalysis.blogspot.com/2015/12/han-ii_25.html

Conflict between the barbarian steppe horsemen and the civilized Chinese the latter using special combat measures and techniques quite effective.

"What would be a feasible contemporary defensive technique/tactic/strategy to deploy against an invading Mongol army?"

Think not only the Mongol but any of those steppe-dwelling horse-archers such as the Scythians, Huns, Magyar, etc. And Xiongnu.

MOBILE FORTIFICATIONS! WAR WAGONS!

Fight the enemy with weapons you have and he does not! Fight the enemy on your terms and not according to the wishes of the adversary!

"How to beat the nomads on the steppes in 3 easy steps"

* Step 1: "Get lots of sturdy wagons"

* Step 2: "Fill the wagons with the best ranged artillery of your era"

* Step 3: "Circle your wagons and fire away"

This sounds like the strategic defensive! Invade the territory of the enemy, occupy terrain conducive to the defensive,  compel the enemy to attack. Fight a strictly defensive battle, weaken the foe, all the while husbanding your forces for a final counter-offensive!!

"with your own cavalry inside, ready to burst forth and mop up if needed"

[artillery of the period defined to include archers and crossbow men. Missile firing troops]

"1st century: the Han dynasty clashed with the world's largest empire, the nomadic Xiongnu confederacy"

"In this era where steel was just emerging to replace bronze, the Han were triumphant in warfare against other city dwelling peoples but the nomadic Xiongnu with their elusive horse archers was an entirely different kind of challenge requiring its own set of innovation"

"The Han had a strong cavalry force of their own, but how could they bring their infantry forces (which can be very vulnerable to fast cavalry archers and lancers) to bear against a foe born on horseback (the saddle was actually recently invented around this time too)?"

"The innovation was in adopting wagons that were normally used for carrying supplies into mobile fortifications . . . an archer on foot was able to use bows and crossbows of a greater size and range, able to fire accurately and reload quickly on firm earth while a horseback archer needs to take the galloping of his horse in mind. This combination of high firepower infantry behind resilient fortifications with swift cavalry of their own was devastating against the Xiongnu confederacy."

Necessity is the mother of invention and all that. And a proven winner as established from decades of warfare between the horse-riding steppe nomads and the Chinese.

War-winning measures, the Chinese adaptive and innovative. I might imagine having to surmount a long and arduous learning curve as well. But persistent and also employing "barbarian taming" methods as they understood the term!!

Pioneers.

This is coolbert:

From that previous blog entry the guard force aboard the SS Dunera a significant [?] portion of which was the Pioneer Corps of the British Army.

A unit it seems in large measure consisting of foreign nationals their loyalty to the war effort not questioned, but military personnel in the main poorly trained for the mission AND HAVING A GRUDGE DIRECTED AGAINST THOSE DETAINEES ENEMY ALIENS OF THE AXIS NATIONS!!

"In the early part of the Second World War the Pioneer Corps was apparently the only British unit that enemy aliens could serve in. Many thousands of Germans and Austrians joined the Pioneer Corps to assist the Allied war efforts and liberation of their home countries. These were mainly Jews and political opponents of the Nazi Regime who had fled to Britain while it was still possible, and included the film production designer Ken Adam, writer George Clare and publisher Robert Maxwell. These men - often dubbed 'The King's Most Loyal Enemy Aliens' - later moved on to serve in fighting units."

"Their knowledge of the German language and customs proved useful; many served in the administration of the British occupation army in Germany and Austria after the war."

In the aftermath of the Second World War native German speakers from the victorious allied powers essential to the administration of occupied Germany? Persons such as Henry [Heinz] Kissinger for instance also those native German speakers engaging in political dialogue with German citizens [in particular those junior ex-military officers of the Nazi regime]! Explaining to them that the road to recovery was the disavowal of all things Nazi. Germany after a period of time once more a member in good standing among the nations of the world was a possible and indeed did become so!!

Hell Ship England II.

This is coolbert:

A "Hell-hole" on a Hell ship. Hell ship British style. Again the instance of allied war atrocity?

Conclusion!

"The Dunera Boys"

"Through her next deployment Dunera lent her name to one of the more notorious events of British maritime history."

"On 10 July 1940, 2,542 detainees, all classified as 'enemy aliens,' were embarked aboard Dunera at Liverpool. They included 200 Italian and 251 German prisoners of war, as well as several dozen Nazi sympathizers, along with 2,036 anti-Nazis, most of them Jewish refugees. Some had already been to sea but their ship, the Arandora Star, had been torpedoed with great loss of life. In addition to the passengers were 309 poorly trained British guards, mostly from the Pioneer Corps"

"The internees' possessions were rifled and subsequently the UK government paid ₤35,000 to the Dunera victims in compensation. Moreover, the 57-day voyage was made under the risk of enemy attack. But it was the physical conditions and ill-treatment that were most deplorable."

“The ship was an overcrowded Hell-hole. Hammocks almost touched, many men had to sleep on the floor or on tables. There was only one piece of soap for twenty men, and one towel for ten men, water was rationed, and luggage was stowed away so there was no change of clothing."

Hell ships as defined during WW2 almost exclusively merchant shipping during a time of war carrying a cargo of POW, detainees, enemy aliens, impressed or forced laborers. Persons pent up and locked in captivity, confinement with scant if any regard for even the most basic sense of humane treatment.

Hell ships noted for "physical conditions and ill-treatment" deplorable in the EXTREME. AND IN CASE OF COMBAT ACTION THOSE BELOW DECKS AND IMPRISONED OFTEN LEFT TO FEND FOR THEMSELVES!

coolbert.

Hell Ship England I.

This is coolbert:

"I could see hundreds of men clinging to the ship. They were like ants and then the ship went up at one end and slid rapidly down, taking the men with her... Many men had broken their necks jumping or diving into the water. Others injured themselves by landing on drifting wreckage and floating debris near the sinking ship" —   Sergeant Norman Price.

Hell ships British style! From that era of the Second World War yet one more instance of allied atrocity?

"More than 7,000 internees were deported, the majority to Canada, some to Australia. The liner Arandora Star left for Canada on 1 July 1940 carrying German and Italian internees. It was torpedoed and sunk with the loss of 714 lives, most of them internees. Others being taken to Australia on the Dunera, which sailed a week later, were subjected to humiliating treatment and terrible conditions on the two-month voyage. Many had their possessions stolen or thrown overboard by the British military guards"

"SS Arandora Star was a British passenger ship of the Blue Star Line. She was built in 1927 as an ocean liner and refrigerated cargo ship, converted in 1929 into a cruise ship and requisitioned as a troop ship in the Second World War. At the end of June 1940 she was assigned the task of transporting German and Italian internees and prisoners of war to Canada. On 2 July 1940 she was sunk in controversial circumstances by a German U-boat with a large loss of life, 865 [souls having perished, conflicting figures as to actual loss]."

IT WOULD SEEM THAT MANY OF THOSE PERSONS PERISHING HAVING "BROKEN THEIR NECKS" BY INFLATING THEIR LIFE VESTS PRIOR TO JUMPING INTO THE WATER!

AS IT WAS ABOARD THE SS LEOPOLDVILLE SO WAS IT TOO ON THE SS ARANDORA STAR!

The existence of "hell ships" as that term understood during WW2 not confined to the Axis powers?

PKK/TAK/ISIL.

This is coolbert:

Alphabet soup!

From the latest news as seen at Core.com and the DEBKAfile the Turk under attack, those responsible for terrorist bombings their identity it seems not known with certainty.

1. "Suicide bomb attack in Istanbul kills 4, dozens wounded"

"ISTANBUL (AP) A suicide attacker detonated a bomb Saturday on Istanbul's main pedestrian shopping street, killing at least four people and wounding dozens of others, including 12 foreigners, according to officials." [Core.com]

2. "Death toll rises to 37 in car bomb blast in central Ankara"

13 March.

"A car bomb explosion Sunday at the Guvenpark near the Turkish Education Ministry in central Ankara caused at least 37 fatalities and scores injured. This is the third major suspected Islamic State major blast to hit the Turkish capital since October 2015." [DEBKAfile]

3. "Turkish air force hit Kurdish targets in N. Iraq amid rising Ankara death toll"

14 March.

"Nine Turkish air force F-16s and two F-4 jets raided 18 Turkish PKK positions in northern Iraq Sunday night after the death toll from a car bombing attack in central Ankara rose to 37. A senior Turkish official charged that two Kurdish bombers - one of them a woman - were responsible." [DEBKAfile]

4. "Aftermath of Ankara bombing: Turkish forces make arrests nationwide"

15  March.

"Turkish security forces arrested 73 people across the country Wednesday as part of a wide-scale operation against the PKK Kurdish underground accused of the last Ankara atrocity Sunday." [DEBKAfile]

5. "Kurdish TAK organization claims responsibility for Ankara bombing"

17 March.

"The Kurdish organization called TAK, whose members quit the PKK Kurdish underground, claimed responsibility on Thursday for the terrorist attack in Ankara earlier this week in which 37 people were killed and dozens were injured." [DEBKAfile]

Turkish intelligence and police are able [??] to determine who the perpetrators are in these various attacks? The possible players with a grudge and animus toward the Turk seems to be almost infinite! Who ever said any of this was going to be easy?

coolbert.

Kurdistan.

This is coolbert:

The Kurds and their ways!!

From the latest edition of the DEBKAfile Russian machinations and Kurdish ambitions mesh in an unexpected way.

1. "The US opposes self-ruled Kurdish region in Syria"

18 March.

"'We don't support self-ruled, semiautonomous zones inside Syria,' said State Department spokesman John Kirby Thursday night, after Kurdish parties established a federal system in areas they control in northern Syria. 'Whole, unified, nonsectarian Syria - that's the goal.' Turkish has warned against this move.

2. "Russia backs self-ruling Kurdish buffer state at Turkey's back door"

18 March.

"Just four days after drawing down the bulk of Russian forces in Syria, President Vladimir Putin was quietly redrawing the Syrian map on federal lines, and planting Russian influence in its first semiautonomous region. DEBKAfile's intelligence sources report that his hand was behind the establishment of the Syrian Kurdish federal region on March 17, at a meeting of Kurdish Democratic Union Party leaders in the Syrian town of Rmeilan."

An independent national homeland for the Kurdish people as was originally proposed by T.,E. Lawrence [Lawrence of Arabia] in the aftermath of the Great War [WW1] once more a subject for serious discussion. That Kurdish portion of Iraq for some time now an autonomous region, almost totally self-governing. This however seems to be a more ambitious scheme, incorporating as it would the territory of other sovereign countries, Syria and Turkey additionally.

Romanov.

This is coolbert:

You find material for blog entries from the most interesting sources:

An interview with Simon Sebag Montefiore the author of  "The Romanovs, 1613-1918" an extract.

That Russian Imperial dynasty of Romanov for those of you with only the minimum of a baccalaureate degree the absolute ruling elite until the time of the Red Russian Revolution [1918]

Thanks to the latest edition of the BBC "History" magazine.

Q: "How would you like to change our views of this dynasty, this period, and this country"

A: "The more we can understand how Russia see itself, its soul and aspirations, the more we will be able to handle the world today."

"You see many of the same interests then that you see in Russian today. For example the whole of Romanov history is the story of trying to gain control of Ukraine. That's how important the country is to them. Crimea, the place where the grand price of Kiev converted to orthodoxy, where Catherine the Great and Potemkin launched their fleet at Sebastopol, these are the things that made Russia Middle-Eastern power. In 1772 Catherine's fleet was bombarding Syrian ports and occupying Beirut, which brings us right up to the Russian presence in Syria today."

As it was in the day of Catherine so as it is now in the day of Putin? Could be!

BlackEnergy 3.

This is coolbet:

Sandworm becomes WORMS! Cyber-warfare!

1. "Ukraine Goes Dark: Russia-Attributed Hackers Take Down Power Grid"

"As many as 80,000 residents in western Ukraine lost power for six hours on Dec. 23. Cybersecurity firms SANS ICS and iSight Partners have attributed the blackout to Russian hacking group Sandworm and its malicious software, BlackEnergy 3."

"Cyberattacks on power grids and other critical infrastructure are not new, but this most recent attack seems to be the first use of cyber as a weapon with kinetic effects during an ongoing conflict, highlighting the growing importance of cybersecurity."

NO REAL DIFFERENCE THAN IF THE POWER PLANT/ELECTRICAL GRID STRUCK WITH A CONVENTIONAL BOMB AS DROPPED BY A WARPLANE. THE PLANT/GRID OFF-LINE, DAMAGED, NOT ABLE TO PROVIDE ELECTRICAL POWER TO CONSUMERS!

2. "Admiral Mike Rogers: Charlie Rose"

"On 'Charlie Rose,' a conversation with Admiral Mike Rogers. He is Director of the National Security Agency and leads U.S. Cyber Command. He assumed both posts in 2014, as the NSA faced the fallout from Edward Snowden’s leaks. Last month, the Agency announced it would consolidate its offensive and defensive operations."

The head of NSA Admiral Mike Rogers speaks of this event [the hacker attack on the power plant/electrical grid in Ukraine] and other matters. Very interesting and worth listening to. * As noted by Admiral Mike the hackers and perpetrators of the cyber-warfare attack on the power plant/electrical grid not only took the system down but had anticipated and taken into account what measures would be taken to restore service! Creative mischief with guile at the same time.

According to Admiral Mike and even more serious threat * WILL BE HACKERS AND CYBER-WARFARE WHERE MANIPULATION OF DATA IS THE OBJECT AND NOT MERELY AN ATTACK WITH "KINETIC EFFECT"!!

This is coolbert:

As seen in the Stars and Stripes:

"Intelligence report: 4 not-so-rosy scenarios for the world"

"the National Intelligence Council [NIC] developed four not-so-rosy scenarios that could become reality given major stresses the world faces during the next 20 years."

1. "— Competition among major international powers sharpens as skittish governments, seeking to maintain relevance at home and protect interests abroad, push to widen their spheres of influence."

2. "— Ominous climate forecasts, severe weather and outbreaks of disease sharply divide countries and groups over how to respond. Extreme temperature change, rainfall and more tropical storms cause humanitarian disasters, overwhelming relief efforts."

3. "— Governments have so much trouble coping with economic and political instability that criminal syndicates, extremists, business elites and religious groups — all exploiting evolving technology — assert control over core government functions."

4. "— Slow-to-no economic growth heightens political volatility across the world, causing some countries to turn inward, take on a defensive posture and shore up borders."

The NIC is a government entity, responsible to the Director National Intelligence.

Cromwell.

This is coolbert:

"A complex character such as that of Cromwell, is incapable of creation, except in times of great civil and religious excitement, and one cannot judge of the man without at the same time considering the contending elements by which he was surrounded. It is possible to take his character to pieces, and, selecting one or other of his qualities as a corner-stone, to build around it a monument which will show him as a patriot or a plotter, a Christian man or a hypocrite, a demon or a demi-god as the sculptor may choose." - - F.A Inderwick

 To the subject of Oliver Cromwell. "50 % saint, 50 % serpent" - - R. Hutton.

This particular image of Oliver Cromwell reputedly by Samuel Cooper.

And as should be understood within the military context Cromwell an amateur but intuitive and skilled battlefield commander. A man quite willing to put his body where his mouth was. A cavalry officer who well understood the value of pursuit. NOT allowing your defeated adversary one moment of respite or surcease.

Retaliation.

This is coolbert:

With regard to the Islamic State and their continued use of chemical weaponry the American military and their Kurdish allies are faced with a very serious problem for which is there is no easy answer or response!

First protective and defensive steps and measures [passive] need to be taken. To include:

* The issuance of protective masks. With replacement filters for same.
[referred to almost always as gas masks.]
* The issuance of chemical suits.
* The issuance of individual decontamination kits.
* The issuance of unit-level decontamination kits.
* Training at all levels for response to chemical attack.
[stop breathing, mask, spread the alarm, continue the mission!]
* Special medical facilities equipped to treat victims of chemical attack.
* Specially trained medical personnel able to treat victims of chemical attack.

Second as to active steps and measures:

AN ABILITY TO RESPOND IN KIND IT MIGHT SEEM ALMOST IF NOT TOTALLY LACKING.

During that era of the Cold War the threat of chemical attack mitigated by a resolve on the part of the United States to respond in kind. "If you use chemical weapons we will use chemical weapons." So was the threat which any potential aggressor had to take seriously. ["aggressor" usually
defined as the Soviet Union or North Korea but not necessarily 100 % confined to!]

The current stockpile of American chemical weaponry as ready-to-go nil to scant if in actuality if non-existent? Previously manufactured and stored chemical weapons for a period of decades now having been destroyed as per agreed upon treaty. Binary chemical munitions [nerve gas] in the United State military inventory of war munitions?

This is not known to me.

THAT USE OF CHEMICAL MUNITIONS AGAINST THE ISLAMIC STATE AS RETALIATION IN KIND PROBABLY OUT OF THE QUESTION?

THE ISLAMIC STATE EVEN WELCOMING RETALIATION IN KIND!! THE VILLAINS EVEN USING "HUGGING TACTICS"  AND/OR THE USE OF HUMAN SHIELDS OR HOSTAGES IN AN EFFORT TO CREATE THE "INCIDENT". THE FEAR ON THE AMERICAN SIDE OF KILLING INNOCENTS AND FRIENDLIES TOO GREAT!!

OH, the bad guys have it all figured out, don't they?

This is coolbert:

MORE USE OF POISON GAS BY THE ISLAMIC STATE!

From the latest edition of the Chicago Tribune only today:

"News briefing"

"Iraq: 600 hurt in Islamic State chemical attacks"

"BAGHDAD - - The Islamic State group has launched two [more] chemicals attacks near the Northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk"

" . . . the latest attack took place early Saturday in the small town of Taza, which was also by struck by a barrage of rockets carrying chemicals three days earlier."

Further from the article:

"the militants have used [chemicals to] include chlorine and a low-grade sulfur mustard which is not very potent"

OH, I am glad it is not very potent. At least not yet.

Again, the utter ruthlessness and implacable will to do evil by the villains of the Islamic State most evident. These guys have no restraint and make that plain and clear, even in a boastful manner. ISIL NOT EVEN FEARING RETALIATION IN KIND!!

We are not talking here of not merely of the pea-shooter type shoulder-fired MANPAD variety! We are speaking of much more advanced SAM systems of a sophisticated nature. Yet more from the latest edition of the DEBKAfile.

ISIL moves south!!

"Recent Irbid clash sparked by first ISIS attack on Jordanian security target"

5 March.

"The clash reported last Wednesday between Jordanian forces and armed terrorists at Irbid developed from a multiple ISIS attack on the kingdom's General Intelligence Directory - its first against a security target inside Jordan. An ISIS gang managed to cross in from Syria, and link up with a sleeper cell at Irbid, 2 km inside the border. The facility attacked houses the command center for coordinating the kingdom's operations among rebel militias in southern Syria. In the four-hour battle, two Jordanian officers were killed and 13 jihadists captured. The rest escaped."

At least to my knowledge this is the first overt ground force clash between combatants of Jordan and the Islamic State. The latter not on the ropes but in some instances such as this on the offensive.

Chemicals ISIL?

This is coolbert:

Almost in a frenzied manner the Islamic State now using chemical munitions?

Perhaps "frenzied" an inappropriate word but not that far short? Routine understand the better description?

As seen in the "USA TODAY" section from the Friday edition of the Chicago Sun Times:

"Kurds describe ISIL chemical attacks"

"Strike was first use of banned arms since Saddam in 1988"

Apparently these are choking agents [chlorine gas] and/or mustard agents [mustard gas]. The latter in gaseous and liquid form both? This is not clear.

Instances of chemical agents being used recently by ISIL to include:

* "On Feb. 25, the Islamic State launched 19 rockets on Sinjar"

* "On Mar 2, the Tal Afar district near Sinjar was hit by at least six rockets."

* "On March 3, 20 rockets were fired at Keske Junction north of Mosul."

1. NO WONDER the American special operations forces are so eager to get their hands on high-value-targets [HVT] who may or do have a knowledge of ISIL chemical capacity.

2. Chemical munitions some time ago captured intact by ISIL. These are now being put to good use by the villains? Those munitions as were originally described as decrepit and mostly dysfunctional. I bet!

OH MY! WMD in action. From a rag-tag bunch of bad-guys quite willing and able to engage in no-holds-barred warfare without really a whole lot of fear of retaliation in kind!

Abu Dawud.

This is coolbert:

I am confused about this. There are now two high-value-targets [HVT] as being captured by American special operations forces in Iraq or Syria that have information and insight into the chemical capability of the Islamic State?

One such personality is Sleiman Daoud al-Afari. The second Sulayman Dawud al-Bakkar also now in American [?] captivity. These are NOT one and the same individual? ISIL senior commanders and those in leadership roles operate under a nom de guerre so confusion is normal in such matters?

"US coalition strikes ISIS chemical weapon sites"

"The US-led coalition carried out the first air strikes on Islamic State (ISIS) chemical weapons sites, the Pentagon said Thursday, acting on crucial information from a captured senior insurgent.

The successful multiple bombings came as a result of intelligence from Sulayman Dawud al-Bakkar, also known as Abu Dawud"

"His capture by US special forces in February - Dawud was transferred Thursday into Iraqi custody after interrogation - appears to be a major boon in the fight against the ISIS group in Iraq and Syria"

See those most recent previous blog entries germane to the topic of ISIL chemical munitions:

Atrocity 1641.

This is coolbert:

Images of atrocity as allegedly perpetrated during the 1641 Rebellion. With commentary these were widely [?] distributed to the public in a manner to provoke much anger and provide justification for military action by the English in Ireland. Anti-Catholic [Irish] sentiment in England strongly felt

Cruel and inhumane murder of women and children in particular most likely to arouse the strongest emotions.

Standard grammar and spelling in the English language not agreed upon with finality during that period.

Naked woman having her womb ripped open and her unborn child flung alive into the flames.

Woman tortured by red-hot tongs.

Women dragged by hair while their children having their brains bashed out.

Naked women forced into the open to fend for themselves in the bitter cold.

Man tortured to death and slowly dismembered.

Babies their stomachs pierced by pitchforks prior to being tossed into a lake or a river to drown.

The Depositions of 1641 as a source for the images and commentary.

See previous blog entry for more images of atrocity as perpetrated during the Thirty Years War!

Rebellion 1641.

This is coolbert:

"They were . . . made with their blood to answer for the cruelties they had exercised upon diverse poor Protestants." - - Cromwell.

THEY the Irish Catholics during the 1641 Rebellion.

Cruelty and atrocity as perpetrated undeniable but exaggerated in an unseemly manner?

From the book "Irish History For Dummies" by Mike Cronin.

 "Massacre in Ulster"

"The rebellion of 1641 was later used in propaganda showing how evil and degenerate the Irish were. It was seen as a moment in history when the Protestant population had been ruthlessly attacked., and if the Protestants wanted to prosper in Ireland they would always have to be wary of such attacks in the future. To instill fear in Protestant populations of the future, 1641 was always remembered as a time when more than 100,000 settlers had been brutally murdered by their Catholic neighbors. This total is still quoted in many histories, but completely overstates the actual numbers killed. Most historians now recognize that the real figure is nearer to 4,000 Protestants being killed during the 1641 rebellion."

"1641 Propaganda"

"The massacres of 1641 soon became the stuff of legend, and dominated the gossip in England that autumn and winter. The evidence, whether or not it was real, of what had happened to the settlers was all the evidence that the English (and Scottish) needed to prove that the Catholic Irish were a bunch of Godless Savages. Refugees fled the massacres of Ulster and began arriving in Dublin - - many would eventually return to England where they told stories about the awful things that had happened to them. Pamphlets and books were quickly produced that told the horrors in Ireland with subtle and understated titles . . . To a hungry readership these publications recorded the horrible murders, the rape of women, and the killing of babies. By August 1642 The English parliament was recording that there had been 154,000 deaths in the rebellion, and by 1648 a book recorded the number at 200,000. The facts didn't matter, this was all anti-Irish propaganda aimed at instilling and reflecting anti-Catholic hatred in the minds of the English."

Mr. Cronin obviously [?] his perspective that of the Irish Catholic.

From the wiki entry: "The number of planters [Protestant settlers] killed in the early months of the uprising is the subject of debate.  Early English Parliamentarian pamphlets claimed that over 200,000 settlers had lost their lives. In fact, recent research has suggested that the number is far more modest, in the region of 4,000 or so killed, though many thousands were expelled from their homes. It is estimated that up to 12,000 Protestants may have lost their lives in total, the majority dying of cold or disease after being expelled from their homes in the depths of winter."

The entire episode of the 1641 Rebellion and the Ulster Massacres must be taken within the context of the Thirty Years War? Emotions cloud reason, etc.

Omar.

This is coolbert:

From that same Chicago Sun Times article further on Abu Omar the Chechen. That senior Islamic State commander I often refer to as Red Beard.

"Detainee says ISIL planned gas attack"

"The Pentagon announced Tuesday that an air strike Friday near Shadadi, Syria, targeted and probably killed a senior Islamic State military leader, Tarkhan Batarashvili, known as 'Omar the Chechen.'"

This report is specious and need clarification? Only recently was it reported that Abu Omar was in Libya organizing jihadists loyal to and having pledged allegiance to the Islamic State.

Unquestionably Abu Omar is a charismatic leader and his death will be a severe blow to the Islamic State. If indeed the man now does "swim with the fishes".

"The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated." - - M. Twain. And for Abu Omar also?

Poison Gas ISIL.

This is coolbert:

Yet more regarding that Islamic State  HVT [high-value-target] as recently captured by American forces.

From The Chicago Sun Times NATION and the article by Tm Vanden Brook:

"Detainee says ISIL planned gas attack."

Poison gas that is. Mustard agent.

"WASHINGTON An Islamic State operative captured in Iraq told U.S. officials that the terrorist group had plans to use mustard gas against American allies fighting the jihadists."

. . . .

"The weapons were slated to be used against Kurdish forces and other U.S. allies."

. . . .

"The detainee has helped American and allied forces learn about the Islamic State's response to pressure fro the U.S.- led bombing campaign and offensives on the ground."

ISIL NOT ONLY PERHAPS HAVING PLANS TO USE POISON GAS BUT TO SOME EXTENT ALREADY HAVING USED POISON GAS. THAT TOO IS THE QUESTION?

coolbert.

HVT.

This is coolbert:

More on that that high-value-target [HVT] as recently captured by American special operations forces. Thanks to Freeper.

"ISIS Detainee Tells U.S. of Terror Group's Chemical Weapons Plans"

"A senior defense official tells NBC News that an ISIS official captured by U.S. Special Operations Forces is a chemical weapons specialist and a 'key operator' in terrorist and military operations. Defense officials identify the detainee as Sleiman Daoud al-Afari, an expert in chemical and biological weapons who formerly worked for Saddam Hussein's regime. Under interrogation by the U.S. military, al-Afari has reportedly provided valuable information regarding ISIS chemical weapons and operations. The Americans are expected to turn al-Afari over to Kurdish forces by the end of this week"

NO more detainees being sent to Guantanamo. This ISIL "key operator" to be released to the Kurds. After a few periods of interrogation by the Kurds al-Afari might well wish he was en route to Gitmo?

OV-10 Bronco.

This is coolbert:

I was surprised to read this. Courtesy of the Daily Beast.

American OV-10 Bronco AFTER A PERIOD OF TWENTY YEARS ONCE MORE TAKES TO THE AIR IN A COMBAT ROLE. Referred to as an antique and correctly so with a measure of justification.

"Why Is America Using These Antique Planes to Fight ISIS?"

"The U.S. military is testing out a dependable, rugged little vintage bomber as it battles elusive ISIS militants in Syria and Iraq."

OV-10 not existing in the American inventory for two decades. How and where these two aircraft obtained from is not clear.

OV-10 able to perform a multiplicity of missions and do so out of unimproved airfields.

BUT AS TO THE REASON WHY THE OV-10 IS BEING DEPLOYED THAT ANSWER IN THE PROVERBIAL NUTSHELL QUITE UNDERSTANDABLE.

"Davis said that the military also wanted to know if Broncos or similar planes could take over for jet fighters such as F-15s and F/A-18s, which conduct most of America’s air strikes in the Middle East but are much more expensive to buy and operate than a propeller-driven plane aircraft as OV-10s. An F-15 can cost as much as $40,000 per flight hour just for fuel and maintenance. By contrast, a Bronco can cost as little as $1,000 for an hour of flying." - - Air Force Capt. P. Bryant Davis.

Other counter-insurgency warplanes of a similar nature to include the Super Tucano or the Pucara. Super Tucano already in the American inventory!

That question of "will it fly" already being answered!

Wexford.

This is coolbert:

"They were . . . made with their blood to answer for the cruelties they had exercised upon diverse poor Protestants." - - Cromwell.

Also from the BBC "History" magazine:

"Cromwell's army ravages Wexford"

"Thousands are slaughtered despite promise of 'no violence' by the English"

11 October 1649. NOT NECESSARILY AN EPISODE FROM THE THIRTY YEARS WAR BUT CLOSE TO IT!!

The type and manner of behavior as epitomized the era. No-holds barred warfare where atrocity became the norm. MUCH TO THE DETRIMENT OF EVERYONE!

"On 11 October 1649 guns rang out across Wexford. for more than a week the Irish port had been besieged by Oliver Cromwell's new Model Army.

"During the siege, Cromwell had been negotiating with the local governor . . . for a peaceful surrender. the English commander promised that if Wexford capitulated he would allow the garrison leave to disperse, and that 'no violence' would be offered to the townsfolk. but n the morning of 11 October, the talks broke down.

"A few hours later, for reasons that remain unclear, the officer commanding Wexford Castle decided on his own initiative to hand it over to Cromwell. Now the New Model Army had the upper hand. As a result the town's defenders broke and fled, Cromwell's men burst into the town."

"What followed was carnage . . . Estimates of the total death toll at Wexford differ widely, but most historians agree that at least 2,000 people may have been killed - - perhaps many more."

Two thousand persons I might assume the preponderance of which probably civilian and not military men.

"Contrary to popular belief, Cromwell had not personally ordered the attack on the town"

NOR DID THE MAN MAKE ANY EFFORT [?] TO CURTAIL ATROCITY! EVENTS AS TRANSPIRED AS I HAVE STATED WERE THE NORM FOR THE PERIOD!

coolbert.

Incarceration.

This is coolbert:

Only vaguely was any of this aware to me. MASS INCARCERATION OF PERSONS DEEMED AS ENEMY ALIENS DURING BOTH WORLD WARS.

1. "Forgotten: Britain’s civilian mass prison camps from World War I"

Mass round-up and incarceration of enemy aliens during the Great War. Hysteria regarding the presence of German nationals in England prior to the start of the Great War to a degree the result of the pulp-fiction of the dime-novelist Le Queux?

"In 1914, Britain stood at the forefront of organizing one of the first civilian mass internment operations of the 20th century. 30,000 civilian German, Austrian and Turkish men who had been living or traveling in Britain in the summer of that year found themselves behind barbed wire, in many cases for the whole duration of World War I."

"Throughout the British Empire and Dominions there was a multitude of further camps such as Ahmednagar in India, Fort Napier in South Africa, and Holsworthy in Australia. Other belligerent powers pursued similar policies. An estimated 800,000 civilians were held captive throughout Europe."

2. "Fact File : Civilian Internment"

Internment of enemy aliens as practiced during the Great War also during that period of 1939 - 1945.

That nuanced approach to incarceration as determined by categories of RISK as perceived:

*   "'A' - 'high security risk', numbering just under 600, who were immediately interned"
*   "'B' - 'doubtful cases', numbering around 6,500, who were supervised and subject to restrictions"
*   "'C' - 'no security risk', numbering around 64,000, who were left at liberty. More than 55,000 of  category  'C' were recognized as refugees from Nazi oppression. The vast majority of these were Jewish."

LESS THAN 1 % OF THE WHOLE THOUGHT TO REPRESENT AS HIGH SECURITY RISK!

1. "Turkistan Islamic Party claims using US-made anti-tank missile in northwest Syria"

"The Turkistan Islamic Party (TIP), an al Qaeda-linked Uighur jihadist group, has posted a photo to social media claiming its fighters recently used at least one US-made TOW anti-tank missile against Syrian regime forces in northwestern Syria. This photo is part of a wider release from the strategic Al Ghab plain in northern Hama province."

2. "Turkistan Islamic Party shows US-made machine gun, captured drone"

535 A.D.

This is coolbert:

Normally this type of blog entry would classified in the paranormal category. As for a time has now been confirmed as more than mere speculation!

NATURAL PHENOMENON AS OCCURRING WITH A BREAK-DOWN OF THE WORLD ORDER AS IT EXISTED AT THE TIME. THE CONSEQUENCES MOST DIRE! I AM REMINDED OF THOSE ADMONITIONS AND WARNINGS OF THE BRITISH ADMIRAL PARRY!

"All of us are observing, as it were, a blue coloured sun; we marvel at bodies which cast no mid-day shadow, and at that strength of intensest heat reaching extreme and dull tepidity ... So we have had a winter without storms, spring without mildness, summer without heat ... The seasons have changed by failing to change; and what used to be achieved by mingled rains cannot be gained from dryness only." - - Magnus Aurelius Cassiodorus

"And it came about during this year that a most dread portent took place. For the sun gave forth its light without brightness, like the moon, during the whole year, and it seemed exceedingly like the sun in eclipse, for the beams it shed were not clear nor such as it is accustomed to shed." - - Procopius of Caesarea

"The sun was dark and its darkness lasted for eighteen months; each day it shone for about four hours; and still this light was only a feeble shadow ... the fruits did not ripen and the wine tasted like sour grapes." - - John of Ephesus"

"New 'Little Ice Age' coincides with fall of Eastern Roman Empire and growth of Arab Empire"

THIS IS OFTEN REFERRED TO AS THE 535 EVENT!! SUPER-VOLCANO ERUPTION OR MULTIPLE SUPER-VOLCANO ERUPTIONS AS IT IS BELIEVED CAUSING  DESTRUCTION ON A GLOBAL SCALE. PLAGUE, CROP FAILURE, MOVEMENT OF ENTIRE NATIONS BIBLICAL IN NATURE.

"The extreme weather events of 535–536 were the most severe and protracted short-term episodes of cooling in the Northern Hemisphere in the last 2,000 years. The event is thought to have been caused by an extensive atmospheric dust veil, possibly resulting from a large volcanic eruption in the tropics, and/or debris from space impacting the Earth. Its effects were widespread, causing unseasonal weather, crop failures, and famines worldwide."

"Researchers . . . have identified an unprecedented, long-lasting cooling in the northern hemisphere 1500 years ago. The drop in temperature immediately followed three large volcanic eruptions in quick succession in the years 536, 540 and 547 AD (also known as the Common Era CE)."

"Within five years of the onset of the 'Late Antique Little Ice Age, as the researchers have dubbed it, the Justinian plague pandemic swept through the Mediterranean between 541 and 543 AD, striking Constantinople and killing millions of people in the following centuries."

. . . .

"Further south, the Arabian Peninsula received more rain allowing more vegetation to grow. The researchers speculate this may have driven expansion of the Arab Empire in the Middle East because the vegetation would have sustained larger herds of camels [horses too] used by the Arab armies for their campaigns"

"In cooler areas, several tribes migrated east towards China, possibly driven away by a lack of pastureland in central Asia. This led to hostilities between nomadic groups and the local ruling powers in the steppe regions of northern China. An alliance between these steppe populations and the Eastern Romans brought down the Sassanian Empire in Persia, the final empire in the region before the rise of the Arab Empire."

THOSE MAJOR WORLD POWERS AS EXISTED AT THE TIME WEAKENED BY NATURAL PHENOMENON OVER WHICH THEY HAD NO CONTROL! A BREAK-DOWN OF THE WORLD ORDER THE RESULT!

See this wiki item titled: "Global catastrophic risk" the danger to the existing world order both from phenomenon man-made and natural occurring.

Haifa.

This is coolbert:

From about three weeks ago now and as reported by the Israeli media this is the "nuclear" speech the DEBKAfile is speaking about:

"Nasrallah threatens to bomb chemical facility, kill thousands of Israelis"

"Head of Lebanese terror group says strike on Haifa ammonia storage facility would have impact similar to nuclear attack"

"Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah on Tuesday insisted that although his group isn’t currently seeking war with Israel, it could defeat the Jewish state in a future conflict by targeting Haifa’s ammonia storage tanks, resulting in massive fatalities."

The detonation of the French AZF factory just a few days after 9/11 allegedly the work of a suicidal jihadist but never with 100 % certainty confirmed.

The devoted reader to the blog take it from there.

This is coolbert:

Hezbollah on the verge of obtaining weapons of mass destruction [WMD]? In finality as seen at the latest edition of the DEBKAfile news letter:

"Hizballah launches Chemicals and Dirty Bombs program at secret Syrian site"

2 March.

"Nasrallah’s 'nuclear speech' and threat to Haifa were backed by a secret new Hizballah program for developing dirty bombs and chemical weapons set up at the Syrian town of Zabadani . . . Syrian and Iranian engineers and technicians are developing the chemical weapons for Hizballah’s arsenal, and foreign experts were hired from outside the Middle East to help build radioactive weapons."

As commented on by Allan Savory immediately in the aftermath of 9/11 WTC;

"This is not a new form of warfare - - it is one of the oldest forms of warfare. Today, due to technological advances, it is capable of wreaking unbelievable damage"

. . . .

"This has been the most massive guerrilla attack ever staged, but it will pale into insignificance with future nuclear [radiological] or biological attacks unless our leaders act with understanding and wisdom as well as determination."

Terrorism more of a nuisance that an existential threat UNLESS THE VILLAINS OBTAIN WMD TO INCLUDE THE DIRTY BOMB!

ISIL & Delta.

This is coolbert:

Yet once more from the latest edition of the DEBKAfile newsletter an event as described not even covered in the American main stream media:

"Senior ISIS figure captured by US special forces in Iraq"

2 March.

"In what appears to signal the start of a new stage of the US war against ISIS, American special forces troops raided an ISIS complex in Iraq early Wednesday morning and captured one of the terrorist organization's senior leaders. The identity of the captive has yet to be released. The raid by about 200 troops, including members of the elite Delta Force, was the first by American ground forces in Iraq since 2011. It followed intensive gathering of intelligence from various sources in the country including Kurdish forces."

This "senior figure" perhaps sent to Gitmo for rigorous and prolonged interrogation. A high-value target if there ever was one. Hooray Delta. You did proud.

Dutchmen.

This is coolbert:

"Being born in a barn does not necessarily make one a horse"

Once again from the latest edition of the DEBKAfile newsletter:

"ISIS executes 8 Dutch would-be deserters"

"The Islamic State has reportedly put to death 8 Dutch fighters after they fought with Iraqi leaders in Raqqa and tried to desert the terrorist groups’ ranks. Several other members of the 75-strong Dutch jihadi group, some of Moroccan origin, had been arrested amid rising tensions with ISIS intelligence operatives from Iraq."

This type of headline I have a problem with.

Those deserters NOT DUTCHMEN AS THE WORD DUTCHMEN NORMALLY, COMMONLY AND ORDINARILY UNDERSTOOD.

Persons having perhaps been born in Holland or traveling on a Dutch passport but NOT DUTCHMEN AS  WE UNDERSTAND THE WORD DUTCHMEN.

SWAT France.

This is coolbert:

We can hardly consider this a good sign. Again from the latest edition of the DEBKAfile newsletter.

Weaponry beyond normal being issued to the French police. NOT heavy weaponry [at least not yet] but close to it. SWAT type gear as needed to combat the jihadi on French soil.

"Cops in Paris to be issued assault rifles for 1st time to fight terror"

1 March.

"France's Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said Monday that selected units of the Paris police are to receive assault rifles and shields resistant to Kalashnikov bullets as part of measures to fight terror in the aftermath of the deadly November 13 terrorist attack"

Ever since the end of the Cold War Europe now awash with military grade small arms of all sorts to include the AK, RPG and PKM. IF YOU WANT IT YOU CAN GET IT!

The police of the various European feeling compelled to respond in kind.

French police of the GIGN anti-terrorist contingent now forewarned and forearmed and all the better for it too.

De Gaulle.

This is coolbert:

Yet more from the latest edition of the DEBKAfile newsletter:

The French prepare to enter the fray in Libya.

"French nuke carrier for sea-air drill with Egypt ahead of Libya offensive"

29 February.

"The two navies and air forces will rehearse a multinational assault on ISIS in Libya, for which President Barack Obama is increasingly reluctant to commit US troops. The French nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle is on its way to the Mediterranean for joint maneuvers with the Egyptian navy to prepare for a joint attack on ISIS in Libya . . . It will be the Egyptian navy’s first joint exercise with a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier."

Suicide Abu Ghraib.

This is coolbert:

From the latest edition of the DEBKAfile newsletter yet more instance of the Islamic State able to conduct operations right in the very heart of the enemy [Shia] camp and do so very successfully:

"ISIS Baghdad terror kills 87 Iraqi security officers, Shiites"

28 February.

"In its deadliest Baghdad assaults for months, ISIS forces Sunday seized Iraqi military positions in Abu Ghraib on the western outskirts of Baghdad, killing at least 17 troops, and sent two suicide bombers on booby-trapped motorbikes to blow up the Shiite Sadr district, killing 70 people and injuring at least 100."

"The Abu Ghraib assault, launched by jihadists driving Humvees and pickup trucks with fixed machine guns, put the Iraq forces to retreat for several hours."

ISIL continues their frontal assaults EVEN UP TO THE OUTSKIRTS OF BAGHDAD in a determined way. That embedded suicide bomber part and parcel of all ISIL military operations.

LMFR II.

This is coolbert:

Conclusion!

As was noted in the previous blog entry, the liquid-metal cooled fast reactor having advantages with regard to submarine operations:

"Greater power in a SMALLER package and able to reach higher power quicker! Also more quiet. Need anything else?"

And this was must have been exactly the thought when the second American nuclear submarine [Seawolf] was equipped with LMFR.

THOSE ADVANTAGES OF THE LMFR VERY QUICKLY FOUND TO BE OUTWEIGHED BY A SERIES OF DISADVANTAGES. ALMOST INSTANTLY AFTER COMMISSIONING THE DECISION MADE TO REFURBISH THE SEAWOLF AND REPLACE THE LMFR WITH A WATER-COOLED CONVENTIONAL NUCLEAR REACTOR.

"Seawolf was the same basic 'double hull' twin-screw submarine design as her predecessor (USS NAUTILUS/SSN-571), but her propulsion system was much more technologically advanced . . . Her liquid-sodium cooled epithermal reactor was more efficient than a 'light water'-cooled thermal system, quieter, and presumably better system, but posed, presumably and arguably, several safety hazards for the ship and crew."

Hazard to the crew in terms of increased exposure to radiation! As has been noted by Admiral Oliver an American submariner only receiving per patrol one-hundred times LESS nuclear radiation than his Soviet counterpart!!

"in February 1957, Rickover had already decided to abandon the sodium-cooled reactor. Early in November 1956, he informed the Commission [Atomic Energy] that he would take steps toward replacing the reactor in the Seawolf with a water-cooled plant similar to that in the Nautilus. The leaks in the Seawolf steam plant were an important factor in the decision but even more persuasive were the inherent limitations in sodium-cooled systems."

"expensive to build, complex to operate, susceptible to prolong shutdown as a result of even minor malfunctions, and difficult and time-consuming to repair." - - Rickover.

And if Admiral Rickover said it was so it must be so.

Technology has advanced in the last sixty years subsequent and now the LMFR is now do-able?

That is the question?

LMFR I.

This is coolbert:

"expensive to build, complex to operate, susceptible to prolong shutdown as a result of even minor malfunctions, and difficult and time-consuming to repair." - - Rickover.

Here with everything you always wanted to know about the liquid metal cooled reactor as was to be found in the Soviet era Alfa class submarine.

A liquid metal cooled nuclear reactor, liquid metal fast reactor or LMFR is an advanced type of nuclear reactor where the primary coolant is a liquid metal. Liquid metal cooled reactors were first adapted for nuclear submarines

The Soviet Union/Russian Navy Project 705 'Lyre' was a class of hunter/killer nuclear-powered submarines. The class is also known by the NATO reporting name of Alfa. They were the fastest class of military submarines built [only the prototype K-222 (NATO Papa class) exceeding them in submerged speed].

The Lira was a unique design among submarines. In addition to the revolutionary use of titanium for its hull, it used a powerful lead cooled fast reactor as a power source, which greatly reduced the size of the reactor compared to conventional designs, thus reducing the overall size of the submarine, and allowing for very high speeds

Two types of LFR reactor were used in Soviet Alfa class submarines of the 1970s. The OK-550 and BM-40A designs were both capable of producing 155MWt. They were significantly lighter than typical water-cooled reactors and had an advantage of being capable to quickly switch between maximum power and minimum noise operation modes.

Greater power in a SMALLER package and able to reach higher power quicker! Also more quiet. Need anything else?

LMFR HOWEVER HAVING DISADVANTAGES THOSE ASPECTS OF WHICH OUTWEIGH THE ADVANTAGES?

MORE TO FOLLOW.
