Bounty!

This is coolbert:

Again with extracts with my commentary from those presentations as seen at the Civil War Museum, Kenosha, Wisconsin, USA.

Bounty!

"As the war dragged on and the need for soldiers deepened, President Abraham Lincoln signed an act on mar 3, 1863, requiring all men between 18 and 45 years of age to enroll into local militia units for possible call to federal service"

. . . .

"To avoid the unpopular need to draft, some communities offered bounties as incentives to volunteers, ranging from $100 to as high as $500 (the price of an eighty acre frontier farm at the time was about $300)"

See my previous blog entry "Me fights mit Sigel" and a description of the bounty as paid to recruits!
